Dafydd Nant
Dafydd Nantwithout Ciwdod nothing that I'm doing now would exist!
Dafydd Nant, then aged 17, was a participant on the Ciwdod scheme. He was the drummer in a Welsh language band called BOB and was mentored for 6 months in 2004, during which time Ciwdod supported their first single release, helped the band with gigs across Wales, and provided support and advice on the Music Industry.
BOB were a young band from Mynytho, Penllyn. They had little opportunity to play further afield and were looking to gig with other bands and in new places.
Dafydd, who has since gone on to play for Sibrydion as well as Rhys Ifans side project The Peth says that "When we signed up to the project we were ready for anything and we just wanted to play so people could hear our music. We played a lot of gigs under CMW events, which gave us that exposure we needed.” Through the mentoring scheme the band were given opportunities and experiences that would otherwise have been hard to come by. Dafydd continues "We went to the studio to record for the first time, we had never been before" CMW was so impressed by what the band recorded that the songs were released on the CIWDOD's label, which offers bands the opportunity to release songs to get the leg up in the industry they need. "It led us to releasing a single, and without that we would have had nothing. We organised a launch, something we had never done before, at the Pwllheli Rygbi Club, which is never full - but it was sold out for us." As well as playing on their home turf, the band got to play all over Wales following on from the single’s release "We played the Point in Cardiff at Ciwdod's first birthday event, and to this day its one of my favourite gigs. If it weren’t for that gig I would have never met Dafydd Ieuan from the Super Furry Animals, and I wouldn't have played for The Peth. Dafydd Ieuan wouldn't have then suggested to Sibrydion that I was capable of playing for them, and that would mean I wouldn't be recording with Kris Jenkins now! Basically, without Ciwdod nothing that I'm doing now would exist!"
Ciwdod began in 2004 and is still going strong, further details can be found here. The project is funded by the Welsh Language Board.
