CMW Marks 20 years of Children's Rights
On the 20th November CMW was at the Senedd in
Cardiff Bay, celebrating the 20th anniversary of the adoption of the UNCRC by
the United Nations General Assembly.
The celebratory event was hosted
by Jane Hutt, the previous Minister for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and
Skills who was there to launch the Welsh Assembly Government's UNCRC Action
Plan for Wales, a Raising Awareness resource that has been developed and
piloted across Wales over the past few months and a national competition.
The First Minister and the
Children's Commissioner for Wales also joined in the celebrations on the day,
along with around 100 young people from across Wales. CMW held drop in DJing
and MP3 mixing workshops throughout, giving young people the opportunity to try
new technologies and experiment with their own music.
This was a significant moment for children and
young people's rights, not just in Wales but across the world. Whilst being fun
and interactive, the day at the Senedd highlighted the very important message
about Wales’s commitment to improving the lives of its children and young
people.
This year is the 20th anniversary of the UNCRC (UN
Convention for the Rights of the Child), the international agreement
designed to protect children and young people and promote their wellbeing. To
mark the milestone and raise awareness of this issue, the Welsh Assembly
Government has developed a workshop toolkit that can be
downloaded at http://www.uncrcletsgetitright.co.uk
The toolkit is a stand alone resource that can
be used with children and young people, professionals and parents. CMW
is currently looking at how to use the toolkit in our work. We are committed to
increasing the rights of children and young people and in using music to
empower them.
