Roc R'afon!
Community Music Wales' Welsh language initiative Ciwdod recently launched an innovative new scheme aimed at developing skills for young people interested in the promotion and marketing of contemporary Welsh language music.
On Thursday evenings young people from Ysgol Gyfun Gwynllyw gathered in the Riverfront theatre in Newport to start five weeks of music industry related workshops. One group formed a new band and aim to compose original songs. Another group will take care of promotion, marketing, management, designing a CD cover and organising an underage gig, due to take place at the Theatre Glanrafon on 8th November.
The participants will develop skills through activities exploring all aspects of music making and its promotion. The project aims to get more young people involved in 'behind the scenes' roles in the music industry.
During the first workshop, the band spent a while deciding on a name so they could pass it to their fellow group of designers and promoters to get going with their side of things. After a friendly debate, the young musicians chose the name 'Fflam!' (which means 'Flame!').
Then, with their new band name firing them all up they enthusiastically got on with a rehearsal to find their own style.
What will next Thursday bring...? There will be a weekly news report (on Facebook and on the CMW website) on the progress of the groups.
